Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley

558. July 2, 1932: Lancashire v Warwickshire E.T. was due to bat at No:3 in the Lancashire second innings but when the first wicket fell at 19 rain prevented any further play. Wisden accepts that E.T. was technically “not out 0” as does the Lancashire scorebook; whether he did actually step onto the field of play or not will never be known but, to avoid altering his career records, this interpretation has been accepted. (Incidentally The Birmingham Post subscribed to this view even though the Warwickshire scorebook took the opposite view and recorded that Tyldesley “did not bat”!) After 573, August 31 1932: Lancashire v Sir Lindsay Parkinson’s XI At the end of 1932 Tyldesley played in one further three-day game which has, to date, never been accorded first-class status. The reason for this is unclear, since two similar matches involving Sir Lindsay Parkinson’s XI against the West Indians and Leicestershire in 1933 and 1935 respectively have always ranked as first-class. That rain restricted play to the first day and just 65 minutes on the second is, naturally, of no consequence. Aside from Tyldesley’s own performance the match - a benefit game for Frank Watson - was notable for a century in only 44 minutes by Learie Constantine. Though excluded from all E.T.’s first-class figures, the details are reproduced here for reference purposes only. The writer would welcome any explanation as to why it was not granted first-class status at the time. Lancashire v Sir Lindsay Parkinson’s XI, Blackpool, August 31, September 1, (2) (Match drawn) not out 125 304-5d 138-2 1 611. June 2, 1934: Lancashire v Australians The strokes in the Lancashire scorebook total 108 for E.T.’s innings of 107. Reworking along vertical lines reveals an extra single has crept in. Accepted he scored 107. 616. June 20, 1934: Lancashire v Hampshire It has proved quite impossible to discover whether Tyldesley was caught out in the first innings by Cecil Paris or Dickie Moore. Wisden and The Cricketer both give the catch to Paris but the Lancashire scorebook and the Southern Echo (Southampton) both credit it to Moore. The definitive answer would be in the Hampshire scorebook, but this is missing. I suspect it may have been the origin of the Paris claim, so this has been used here. 640. May 25, 1935: Lancashire v Leicestershire Retained the narrative that Tyldesley was “absent hurt” in both innings, despite the Lancashire scorebook’s “absent ill”. “Hurt” would appear more appropriate to a strained stomach muscle in any event.
