The top fourteen teams played in Segment A, divided into two groups of seven each. The top four from each group progressed to the Super Eight stage, in which each side played the four qualifiers from the other group whilst retaining the points gained against its three fellow-qualifiers from its own group. The winners of the Super Eights (Colombo) became Premier Champions for 2006/07. The remaining seven teams played in Segment B. The bottom two sides were relegated to the non-first-class Sara Trophy for 2007/08; the top two progressed to a special Promotion/Relegation league where they were joined by the bottom three sides from each of the Segment A groups (i.e. the sides that had failed to qualify for the Super Eights). The top two teams in the Promotion/Relegation league qualified to join the Super Eight sides in a ten-team Tier A in 2007/08; the remaining six sides in the Promotion/Relegation league joined the three mid-table sides from Segment B and the 2006/07 Sara Trophy winners (Moratuwa) in a ten-team Tier B for 2007/08. 3
