Sri Lanka First-Class Matches 2004/05 and 2005

Points are awarded: Win outright: 12 points First innings lead in drawn match: 8 points Bonus points (for each innings): Batting: 0.005 points per run (maximum 2 points per innings) Bowling: 0.1 points per wicket The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals of the competition. The remaining twelve teams were divided into four groups for the Plate. In the Plate groups the other two teams in the group were played (even if the teams had met already) with points from matches already played carried forward. The Plate group winners would have qualified for the Plate semi-finals and the two teams with fewest points would have competed in the Promotion/Relegation League with the top two teams from the non-first-class Division II competition. However, due to the Asian tsunami disaster it was only possible to play the first match in each Plate group. Sri Lanka Cricket did attempt to reschedule the matches but at the request of the clubs it was later decided to cancel the rest of the competition. As a result, for the 2005/06 season Sri Lanka Cricket allowed twenty teams to play in the Premier Championship, the semi-finalists from the Division II tournament of 2004/05 joining the sixteen teams who played in 2004/05. It was intended to cut the number of teams for the 2006/07 season based on the results in 2005/06.
