First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual 2020
2 EDITORS INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND XI ANNUAL Welcome to the 2020 edition of the First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual, which reviews the 60th season of the Second Eleven Championship. In a slight change to the traditional opening, and on behalf of the committee of the ACS, I would like to first offer thanks to all of the people who have made this publication possible, starting with Howard Clayton, for his painstaking work in collating and updating the statistical and biographical records of the 800+ players who appeared for County Second Elevens during the season. Also, to Keith Gerrish for his research through Ancestry.com plus his painstaking proof-reading, to Chris Overson for checking the final copy prior to printing and to Andrew Hignell for his support and liaison with the ACS. Most of the hard work is carried out throughout the season by our friends and colleagues who, in addition to scoring matches, take the time to collect the biographical information you enjoy, and ensure all of the scorecards you see through NV Live Scores and CricketArchive are complete – Jane Hough and John Wallis (Derbyshire), Peter Connolly and Grahame Maddison (Durham), Paul Parkinson (Essex), Ben Davies, Andrew Hignell, Byron Jones and Kevin Probert (Glamorgan), Steve Cashmore and Keith Gerrish (Gloucestershire), Peter Danks and Alan Mills (Hampshire), Andy Bateup (Kent), Diana Lloyd and Garry Morgan (Lancashire), Peter Johnson (Leicestershire), Neil Smith and Steven Fletcher (Middlesex), Su Klyne (MCCYoung Cricketers), Quentin Jones (Northamptonshire), Anne Cusworth (Nottinghamshire), Colin Crees (Somerset), Debbie Beesley (Surrey), Graham Irwin (Sussex), Russ Dickenson (Warwickshire), Sue Drinkwater and Phil Mellish (Worcestershire), John Virr (Yorkshire), Matt Bidwell (ECB) and to all of the other scorers who have assisted during the season. Following its introduction in 2018, last season saw the country-wide use of PCS Pro as the primary scoring tool, which enabled counties to display live scores and, where available, provide video clips of Second Eleven action. Scores were also published through live.nvplay.com. A massive thank you goes to NV Interactive for taking on board suggestions from our colleagues, and for the support provided throughout the season. I hope everyone will agree the hard work has been worthwhile, any issues have been resolved quickly and hopefully the service can continue to develop. Thanks also to the staff at City Press for overseeing the type-setting and printing; to Ian Smith and all at CricketArchive, and to Nottinghamshire CCC for the provision of the cover photo of the 2019 Second Eleven Player of the Year, Liam Patterson-White, whose record across all three competitions and First Eleven breakthrough made him the outstanding candidate. Although this will be covered in Howard’s review of the season, I would like to add congratulations to the victors in the three competitions; Hampshire (Championship), Kent (Trophy) and Glamorgan (T20). Durham must be wondering when their time will come in white ball cricket, falling at the T20 semi-final stage at
