First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual 2019
2 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual for 2019. As usual, I hope the publication meets the needs of all those involved in Second Eleven cricket, including coaches, scorers and supporters. On behalf of the committee of the ACS, thanks to all of the scorers and other Club officials for their painstaking work in gathering the information – both statistical and biographical – and to Howard Clayton and Keith Gerrish in compiling this information into yet another handsome volume. 2019 is the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Eleven Championship, and following this introduction is a short overviewof the competition, outlining how the competition has evolved, together with the introduction of limited- overs matches. Further changes are likely to the structure of Second Eleven cricket during the coming years especially with the advent of the new 100-ball franchise competition and a revamped One-Day Cup and, with this in mind, we have made a few changes to the structure of the Annual with an all-county A-Z rather than county-by-county as in previous years. With the likelihood of many more players appearing for more than one Second Eleven, as well as combined county matches, we hope that this all-county A-Z will avoid duplication as well as making it easier for readers to track down player details. I would be delighted to hear your thoughts via secretary@acscricket.com . During 2018 the counties played a series of Championship matches as well as other three or four day friendlies. Results of these latter games are included in the Annual, but the records section only relate to Championship games. However, player biographies reflect best batting and bowling performances in all of these multi-innings games. Any player who only appeared in a friendly game is denoted by an asterisk in the Index of Players. As far as the combined counties games are concerned, the potted scores are given on the pages of the home team(s). Where new records were set during 2018, these are denoted in bold italic type for ease of recognition. Please also be aware that several loan transfers take place each season. Where a player’s loan spell is known, it is indicated in his individual biography. Also please note that, in the Second Eleven T20 Competition, teams played two T20 games on each date so, in the individual County pages and in the player biographies, these two games will be referred to as “Match 1” and “Match 2” On behalf of Howard and Keith, I would like to thank the following for providing their teams’ averages and biographical information and for sending all Second Eleven scorecards to Cricket Archive – John Wallis & Jane Hough (Derbyshire), Grahame Maddison (Durham), Paul Parkinson (Essex), Andrew Hignell, Byron Jones, Ben Davies and Kevin Probert (Glamorgan), Steve Cashmore (Gloucestershire), Peter Danks and Alan Mills (Hampshire), Andy Bateup (Kent), Diana Lloyd and Garry Morgan (Lancashire), Peter Johnson (Leicestershire), Neil Smith (MCC Young Cricketers), Sue Klyne (Middlesex), Quentin Jones
