First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual 2018
2 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the First-Class Counties Second Eleven Annual for 2018. As usual, I hope the publication meets the needs of all Second Eleven Coaches and Scorers and that it provides hours of pleasant browsing for the numerous aficionados and followers of Second Eleven cricket around the country. I next repeat a paragraph from last year’s Review of the Season, which will be, I hope, self-explanatory. Since the Counties were now restricted to nine three-day games, many of them arranged three or four day friendlies. Results of these games are included in the Annual, but all records are for Championship games only. However, player biographies reflect best batting and bowling performances in all three- and four-day games. Any player who played only in a friendly game is denoted by an asterisk, in the County Biographies and in the Index of Players, which has now been broken down and added to the end of each county section which also contains line scores and averages. Scotland A/Development Eleven played only friendly games. Again this season, 3- and 4-day friendly fixtures have seen teams comprised of players from two Clubs take the field. In such cases, the potted scores are given on the pages of the home team on the page of each of the two sides in the combined side. Now a personal plea from the Editor. This year has again been particularly problematic in the compiling of the biographies of some Counties. In some cases, this was because forms given to players were not then returned to the Scorer. So for 2018, please be prepared to sit the new player down and complete the form with him. It will take but a few minutes, if that. If you are unsure whether a player has played before, a simple check in the 2018 Lists of Players will answer the question. Some players play for as many five Counties in a single season and may only appear in Friendlies for one of those Counties. Such is indicated in the appropriate County Biography pages by an asterisk. Some new records were set in 2017 and they are indicated, where necessary, in bold italic type for ease of recognition. Please also be aware that several loan transfers take place each season. Where a player’s loan spell is known, it is indicated in his individual biography. Please note that, in the Second Eleven T20 Competition, teams played two T20 games on each date so, in the individual County pages and in the player biographies, these two games will be referred to as “Match 1” (pre-lunch) and “Match 2” As usual, I am most grateful to the following for providing so speedily their counties’ averages and biographical information and for sending all Second Eleven scorecards to Cricket Archive – John Wallis & Jane Hough (Derbyshire), Grahame Maddison (Durham), Paul Parkinson (Essex), Andrew Hignell, Byron Jones, Gareth Watkins & Robin Eyles (Glamorgan), Steve Cashmore & Keith Gerrish (Gloucestershire), Peter Danks & Alan Mills (Hampshire), Andy Bateup (Kent), Diana Lloyd and Mike Dixon (Lancashire), Peter Johnson (Leicestershire), Neil Smith (MCC Young Cricketers), Martyn Fryer (Middlesex), Mick Woolley
