Toss: Sri Lanka Close of Play: 1st day: Sri Lanka (1) 277-9 (M.K.P.A.D.Perera 16, Herath 5, 86 overs); 2nd day: Sri Lanka (2) 151-3 (Karunaratne 59, Mathews 12, 34 overs); 3rd day: South Africa (2) 139-5 (de Bruyn 45, T.Bavuma 14, 41 overs). Man of the Match: F.D.M.Karunaratne. A.D.Mathews passed 5,000 runs in Test matches when he reached 8 in the first innings. H.M.Amla passed 9,000 runs in Test matches when he reached 3 in the first innings. K.A.Maharaj’s analysis of 9-129 was second only to H.J.Tayfield’s 9-113 (v England at Johannesburg in 1956/57) in a Test innings for South Africa. It was the best innings return in any Test against Sri Lanka (previously 8-58 by Imran Khan for Pakistan at Lahore in 1981/82; the previous best for South Africa v Sri Lanka was 7-81 by M.de Lange at Durban in 2011/12). Altogether Maharaj took 12-283, South Africa’s best match return in Tests against Sri Lanka (previously 10-92 by K.Rabada at Cape Town in 2016/17). The 74 added by M.K.P.A.D.Perera and H.M.R.K.B.Herath was the best for Sri Lanka’s 10th wicket v South Africa (previously 42 by H.P.Tillekeratne and M.Muralitharan at Centurion in 2002/03). 669 Sri Lanka in 2018
