It was England's best against South Africa for any wicket (previously 370 for the third wicket by W.J.Edrich and D.C.S.Compton at Lord's in 1947) and England's second highest for any Test wicket (behind the 411 added for the fourth wicket by P.B.H.May and M.C.Cowdrey v West Indies at Edgbaston in 1957). Stokes's score of 258 was the highest individual innings for England against South Africa (previously 243 by E.Paynter at Durban in 1938/39) and the highest by any Test no.6 (previously 250 by K.D.Walters for Australia v New Zealand at Christchurch in 1976/77). Stokes reached his 200 off only 163 balls (second only to N.J.Astle, who required only 153 to reach 200 against England at Christchurch in 2001/02) and he struck 11 sixes in all, beating the previous England record of 10 by W.R.Hammond v New Zealand at Auckland in 1932/33.
