Third umpire: C.K.Nandan. Referee: J.J.Crowe. Toss: India Close of Play: 1st day: India (1) 231-7 (Rahane 89, Ashwin 6, 84 overs); 2nd day: South Africa (1) 121 all out; 3rd day: India (2) 190-4 (Kohli 83, Rahane 52, 81 overs); 4th day: South Africa (2) 72-2 (Amla 23, de Villiers 11, 72 overs). Man of the Match: A.M.Rahane. D.J.Vilas passed 4,000 runs in first-class matches when he reached 8 in the first innings. A.M.Rahane provided the eighth instance for India in Tests (but the first v South Africa) of two separate hundreds. South Africa (2) was notable for extremely slow scoring as the visitors strove (vainly) to ward off defeat: the overall scoring rate of 16.65 per hundred balls was the third lowest of any Test innings that was all out or in which at least 50 runs were scored. R.Ashwin and R.A. Jadeja recorded bowling figures of a kind seldom seen since R.G.Nadkarni played for India; Jadeja at one point bowled 108 successive scoreless deliveries, including 17 consecutive maidens. 207 India in 2015/16
