ACS Oveseas First-Class Annual 2013
Among bowlers, reference has already been made to the achievements of M.N.Piedt but the leading wicket-taker for the season was the right-arm fast-medium K.J.Abbott of Dolphins, who claimed 65 wickets at an average of only 14.29. His strike rate of 30 – a wicket every five overs – was one with which even Philander might be happy, and he capped a splendid season with a fine debut for his country, claiming a return of 7-29 against Pakistan. His season was all the more meritorious in that he did not appear at all in the Provincial Competition, so his performances were all against relatively strong opposition. Although essentially a South African tournament, the Provincial Competition includes Namibia, whose home matches will be found in the Rest of the World section. The other 13 provincial teams go to make up the Sunfoil franchises as follows. Cape Cobras = Western Province and Boland; Dolphins = KwaZulu-Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Inland; Knights (‘Eagles’ until 2009/10) = Free State and Griqualand West; Lions = Gauteng and North West; Titans = Northerns and Easterns; Warriors = Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts.
