ACS Overseas FIrst-Class Annual 2012
R.D.Bist of the Ranji champions Rajasthan was easily the highest run-scorer in the first-class season with 1,331 at 73.94, and he also headed the Ranji aggregates with 1,034 at 86.16. His teammate V.A.Saxena, helped by a monumental 257 in the final, was the second-highest scorer in the Ranji Trophy with 897 at 52.76. The only bowler to exceed 50 wickets in the season, with 59 at 19.94, was A.B.Dinda of Bengal (medium-fast). Arguably the outstanding individual performance of the season, however, came from a wicketkeeper. Playing for Hyderabad against Assam, I.Khaleel claimed 14 dismissals in the match (11 c, 3 st) to set a new first-class record. During the 2012 close season the BCCI agreed to overhaul the Ranji Trophy. In 2012/13 the 27 teams will be divided into three groups of nine each. Groups A and B are of roughly equal standard and the top three from each will qualify for the quarter-finals; Group C is weaker and only the top two will qualify. At the league stage an outright win will receive 6 points instead of 5, and all the knockout matches will be played over five days (rather than the final only). The new league system means a significant increase in the amount of first-class cricket, since each team will play a minimum of eight matches: a full Ranji season will consist of 115 matches rather than 88 as hitherto.
