ACS Overseas First-Class Annual 2011
The Provincial competition also witnessed one of the most extraordinary first-class matches of recent times. This was the game between Griqualand West and Easterns, which created a new meaning (or perhaps, revived an old one) for the expression ‘one-day cricket’. It started on 10 March at Kimberley; and during that single day, 32 wickets fell while 323 runs were scored, Griquas winning by eight wickets. This was achieved without collusion between the captains, forfeited innings, or any similar contrivance. It was the third case of a one-day finish in South African cricket, both previous occurrences being before the First World War; and it was the first instance anywhere since Kent beat Worcestershire at Tunbridge Wells in June 1960. To put this in perspective, the match between Griquas and Easterns was the 53,043rd first-class match to be played whereas the 1960 Kent game was the 23,258th, which means that well over half of all first-class cricket separates the two most recent examples of a first-day result. At the end of the season South Africa A played two matches against Bangladesh A. The hosts won the first match easily; the second, like so many other games in this unusually wet season, was ruined by rain. Readers may find it helpful to note that the SuperSport franchises are made up from the provincial sides as follows. Cape Cobras = Western Province and Boland; Dolphins = KwaZulu-Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Inland; Eagles = Free State and Griqualand West; Lions = Gauteng and North West; Titans = Northerns and Easterns; Warriors = Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts.
