ACS Overseas First-Class Annual 2010
Zimbabwe in 2009/10 Although Zimbabwe has not played a Test match since September 2005, it remains a full member of ICC. A ‘Zimbabwe XI’ was invited to take part in the ICC Inter-Continental Cup 2009-2010, playing home matches against Afghanistan and Kenya during the 2009/10 season. All the other first-class matches in 2009/10 were part of a greatly expanded Logan Cup. Despite some rebranding, the five teams were essentially the familiar provincial sides, of which Southerns (or Masvingo) returned to the competition after a season’s absence. The number of teams was thus increased from four to five; moreover, each team played the others three times which, with the addition of a final between the top two (who proved to be Mashonaland Eagles and Mid West Rhinos), meant that the Cup comprised 31 matches compared with 12 in 2008/09. The final was drawn, so Mashonaland won the title by virtue of heading the league table. The original plan had been for each team to play the others four times in a double home-and-away format, which would have meant that each team would play 16 league matches. But after the start of the competition was delayed by administrative problems, the number of matches per team was cut to 12.
