ACS Overseas First-Class Annual 2010
West Indies in 2009/10 West Indies’ troubled recent Test record continued. After defeat in both Tests on a short tour of England in 2009, the home Test series against Bangladesh was also lost 2-0 after all the first-choice players withdrew owing to a dispute with Board. In 2009/10, with the leading players restored, West Indies toured Australia and were well beaten in the series (see the Australia section). There were no home Tests in 2009/10, although at the end of the season there was a first-class friendly between Jamaica and Ireland. All the other first-class matches in 2009/10 were played in the revamped Regional Four-Day Competition. This had been played as a conventional home-and-away league in 2008/09. But in 2009/10 the number of matches was halved so that the seven teams played each other only once rather than twice, and each round of three matches was played in the same territory, so that the first three matches, for instance, were all played on 8-11 January in Jamaica. Successive rounds were played in the Leeward Islands, Barbados, Barbados (again), Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands. Jamaica, runaway winners in 2008/09, retained the championship in 2009/10 but by only a narrow margin over Barbados in second place.
