ACS Overseas First-Class Annual 2009
West Indies in 2008/09 The first-class season in the Caribbean comprised 48 matches. This total does not include the four Tests, and one other first-class match, played by the Australians in May and June 2008: for these matches, see the 2008 section on pages 16-19. In 2008/09, the England team played five Tests and one other first-class match. Only four Tests had been scheduled but an extra match was hurriedly arranged when the Second Test was abandoned after ten balls owing to the state of the ground. England, after capitulating in the First Test, came back strongly in the rest of the series but West Indies held out doggedly for draws to secure the series one-nil. This was West Indies’ first series win since 2004. The Regional Four-Day Competition involved seven teams. Jamaica won by a wide margin over Windward Islands as runners-up. The tournament was played home and away, whereas in recent seasons the teams had met each other once only, so the number of matches doubled to 42 compared with 21 in 2007/08. The round of matches due to begin on 20 March was delayed by a day owing to a strike organised by the West Indies Players' Association.
