ACS Overseas First-Class Annual 2009

Sri Lanka in 2008/09 There were 111 first-class matches in Sri Lanka in 2008/09. Note that this total does not include the three Tests against India in July and August 2008; these are counted as belonging to the 2008 season and will be found on pages 20-22. There was no international first-class cricket in Sri Lanka in 2008/09. The first-class club competition, the Premier Championship, involved 100 matches between 21 teams in two Tiers, each playing on a round-robin basis. As winners of the upper Tier, Colts Cricket Club were Premier Champions for 2008/09. Note that one game in Tier B was abandoned on the first day owing to an unfit pitch. A replay was ordered but apparently did not take place; however, the original match retains its first-class status although it is excluded from the final Tier B table. The first-class season was brought to a close by the Inter-Provincial Tournament. Five teams contested a round-robin league followed by a final between the two leading sides: 11 matches in all. The league winners, Wayamba, were well beaten in the final by Basnahira North, who had come a very close second in the league.
