In the absence of Miller and Awdry, the latter having been called away by the Yeomanry, Taunton captained Wiltshire. Sandford had also been called up before Wiltshire’s second innings whilst Sandham left before Surrey’s second innings in order to play for the first team against Worcestershire. On the first day rain stopped play just before lunch and the match did not resume until 3.30 pm. On the second day more rain curtailed Wiltshire’s bid to score 112 for victory in about 2 hours. For Wiltshire Tayler top-scored with 43. Mitchell took 10 wickets for 126 runs in the match, including 6 for 56 in the Surrey first innings, during which he and A W Newman bowled unchanged. For Surrey Goatly scored 89, adding 76 for the eighth wicket with Sullivan, and Abel took 4 wickets in the Wiltshire first innings.
