The earlier match at Gravesend in July had been won by Kent 2nd XI. For Staffordshire Barnes scored 58 which contained 1 six and 3 fours and he also took 10 wickets in the match for 25 runs including 6 for 13 in the Kent first innings. Wilson took 5 wickets for 14 runs in the Kent second innings. For the losers Freeman took 7 wickets for 55 runs in the Staffordshire innings. Kent were in a little difficulty owing to the war, Lowe having been called away suddenly to join the colours as a reservist. W H Ashdown had been telegraphed for, but had not arrived, and so Kent played with only 10 to bat in their first innings.
