The match between the two teams at Tavistock in July had been won by Devon by 1 run. Berkshire made Devon follow on and were eventually set 244 to win in 2 hours. They reached 100 in 45 minutes, 200 in 80 minutes, and achieved victory with 20 minutes to spare, having scored the runs off just 39 overs. For the winners there were 8 fours in Norris’ 59, 8 fours in Belcher’s 72, 17 fours in Collins’ 108 (an innings lasting 85 minutes), 8 fours in Brougham’s 51, and 1 six and 8 fours in Bennett’s unbeaten 63. Woodburn had figures of 13 wickets for 196 runs in the match, including 6 for 63 in Devon’s first innings and 7 for 133 in their second. Shoosmith took 4 catches in Devon’s first innings, all at slip. In Devon’s second innings Hawksworth attempted a caught and bowled chance off a hard hit from Shelley but split his hand badly between the third and fourth fingers. He was taken to hospital and played no further part in the match. His over was left incomplete. Croom (the groundsman) took his place in the field. For the losers there were 24 fours in Carroll’s 137, an innings lasting just under 3 hours, and 1 six and 8 fours in Shelley’s 74. Carroll and Fulcher added 124 for the sixth wicket in Devon’s second innings. Davies caught 3 batsmen in Berkshire’s first innings and stumped one in their second innings; Carroll took 3 catches in Berkshire’s first innings and his one handed catch to dismiss Bennett was thought to be one of the finest catches ever taken on this ground.
