On the morning of the second day, Suffolk had narrowly saved the follow on. The match between the two sides at Skegness in July had been won by Lincolnshire by 198 runs. For the winners Thompson scored 93 with 10 fours and Broughton 77 with 13 fours. In the Lincolnshire first innings, this pair put on 121 runs for the third wicket. In the Suffolk first innings Day took 6 wickets for 74 runs. For the home side Penfold took 5 wickets for 47 runs in the Lincolnshire second innings, and Mortimer top-scored with 49 in the Suffolk first innings.
