Then heavy rain at 3.00 pm flooded the pitch and led to play being abandoned for the day. Norfolk had won the encounter between the two sides in July at the Elstow School ground by six wickets. For Norfolk, there were 5 sixes, and 18 fours in Falcon’s 155, an innings of one hour and 40 minutes. Stevens’s 58 included 9 fours, and Popham’s 50 contained 4 fours. In the Norfolk first innings Falcon and Popham added 197 runs for the first wicket. For Bedfordshire there were 3 fours in Morcom’s 42. It was reported that King was taken ill and on the second day of the Norfolk first innings Gibson fielded as his substitute. Still not fully well King batted lower down the order at tenth place by which time the follow on had been saved. [Missing: In Norfolk second innings extras breakdown; in Bedfordshire innings fall of eighth and ninth wickets.] Sources: Eastern Daily Press 12,13 August; Eastern Evening News 11,12 August; Norfolk Chronicle 15 August; Norwich Mercury 15 August; Bedfordshire Advertiser 15 August; Bedfordshire Standard 15 August; Leighton Buzzard Reporter 16 August; Luton Reporter 18 August; East Anglian Daily Times 12,13 August; Cricket 23 August, p 545. 94
