The match between the two teams at Cardiff Arms Park in July had been won by Glamorgan by 7 wickets. Monmouthshire commenced their second innings at 5.00 pm on the second afternoon. They were set a target of 93 runs in 90 minutes and won at 6.05 pm. For the winners there were 11 fours in E S Phillips’ 105 and 8 fours in F G Phillips’ 62; they added 138 for Monmouthshire’s seventh wicket in their first innings. Silverlock took 6 wickets for 31 runs in Glamorgan’s first innings and F G Phillips took 5 wickets for 66 runs in their second. As Diver had injured his hands in Glamorgan’s first innings, H A James kept wicket in their second innings and took 4 catches. Robathan took 3 catches in the match. For the losers there were 12 fours in Gibbs’ 95 and 11 fours in Jones’ unbeaten 108. The latter was missed at least 6 times and, when on 96, a ball from W A Williams hit his wicket but did not dislodge the bails. Gibbs and Jones added 118 for the fifth wicket in Glamorgan’s second innings. Hacker took 7 wickets for 117 runs in Monmouthshire’s first innings. The captain, Riches, incurred a thigh strain in Glamorgan’s first innings and had to bat with a runner. [Missing: Part extras breakdown; part fall of wickets; in Monmouthshire first innings time taken for E S Phillips’s 105; in Monmouthshire’s second innings bowling order; in Glamorgan second innings duration of Jones’ 108 not out.] Sources: Monmouthshire Evening Post 1,2,4 August; South Wales Argus 2,4 August; South Wales Daily News 2,4 August; Western Mail 2,4 August; Cricket 9 August, p 498; The Sportsman 2,4 August. 75
