For the winners there were 1 five and 7 fours in Sewell’s 61, 1 six and 10 fours in Goodden’s 91 and 8 fours in Farrer’s 50. McIntyre had figures of 9 wickets for 156 runs, including 6 for 140 in Devon’s second innings; 8 of his victims were dismissed without assistance from his fielders. In the first innings C P Gooden and P P Hope added 77 runs for the seventh wicket and C P Gooden and H W Farrer added 70 runs for the ninth wicket. For the losers there were 8 fours in Reed’s 51, 8 fours in Fulcher’s 71, 1 six and 7 fours in Light’s 53 and 10 fours in Preedy’s 62. Shelley had injured his hand attempting a catch the previous day and was unable to bat in Devon’s first innings. In their second innings he batted at number 11 and added 58 for the last wicket with Preedy, who hit 18 off one over from Sewell and was the beneficiary of a collection which raised almost £3. Light took 5 wickets for 96 runs in Dorset’s first innings. Davies caught 3 batsmen and stumped another in the match. Preedy took 3 catches in Dorset’s second innings and Reed 3 in the match. Devon fielded 5 professionals which was the largest number that they ever played in one match.
