In the Staffordshire first innings Freeman bowled exceptionally well to finish with excellent figures of 9 for 36. He also took 4 for 38 in the second innings to give him match figures of 13 for 74. The Kent captain Troughton scored 65 with 6 fours. For Staffordshire Nichols scored 57 with 4 fours in their first innings, over half of the final total. Rain stopped play at 6 o’clock on the first day and also prevented a finish on Tuesday, the match ending just before 4 pm. This was the first use of this ground for a Championship match.
