For the winners there were 10 fours in F G Phillips’ 64; he also top-scored in Monmouthshire’s second innings with an unbeaten 47. Hewes’ 31 contained a hit for 7. Gilbert had match figures of 14 wickets for 103 runs, including 9 wickets for 10 runs in Devon’s first innings and 5 for 93 in their second. His analysis in Devon’s first innings was a record for Monmouthshire; he bowled unchanged as Devon were bowled out in just 22.2 overs and dismissed eight batsmen without assistance from his teammates. For the losers there were 9 fours in the debutant Reed’s 81 and 15 fours in Shelley’s unbeaten 74. Light took 5 wickets for 58 runs in Monmouthshire’s first innings.
