The match between the two teams at South Shields in June was drawn with no result on first innings. Owing to rain no start was possible until after 4:30 pm on the first day, when Briggs and Taylor added 74 for the first wicket in very quick time, the latter’s 58 included 10 fours. Later Barnes and Nichols added 89 in 55 minutes for the fourth wicket and the total was 192-3 at the close of day one. Barnes carried his score to 83 also with 10 fours, made in 105 minutes. He took 8 for 19 with the last four Northumbrian wickets in the first innings falling to him in successive balls - Richardson and Plummer with the last 2 balls of his thirteenth over and Norbury and Watson with the first 2 balls of his fourteenth. The extras total of 37 was by far the biggest contributor to the score with Lyons conceding 31 byes, mainly off Barnes. Following on Northumberland fared little better with Morgan taking 5 for 36. For Northumberland Wingham took 7 for 88 in the Staffordshire innings. In the Northumberland second innings although Hunting made 54 with 1 six and 6 fours and with Norbury made a good stand, the rest could only muster 6 runs between them. Lionel Plummer got a ‘king pair’ on his debut.
