They had also won at Stoke-on-Trent earlier in the season. Though they lacked Barnes who was injured, a crowd of two to three thousand saw Staffordshire prove more than a match for Durham. Heath top scored with 52 in the first innings which included 5 fours. Morgan had match figures of 11 for 70, taking 7 for 23 in the Durham first innings and 4 for 47 in the second. In the Durham first innings the last 5 wickets fell to Bucknell and Morgan for only 9 runs. In the second Bucknell took 5 for 43 and Nichols replaced Lyons as wicket-keeper. For Durham Morris took 10 wickets in the match for 80 runs including 6 for 29 in the second innings. Brooks and Hendren gave the home team a good start on their task of making 179 to win but the rest collapsed to give Staffordshire victory.
