A match dominated by Barnes again in which he scored 109 runs for once out, 54 in the first innings with 4 fours, 55 in the second with 2 fours and then claimed 10 wickets in the match for 42 runs. Barnes added 96 with Campbell for the seventh wicket in the second innings. Barnes produced two spells of irresistible bowling: in Durham’s first innings, after bowling 9 overs without a wicket, in the next 4.1 overs he took 5 wickets for 6 runs. In the second innings he wrapped up the match by taking 4 wickets for 5 runs in 4.4 overs. For the visitors Parkin took 6 for 39 in Staffordshire’s first innings. Staffordshire started this season with a policy of limiting the number of playing professionals to four. The match was watched by an estimated 2,000 people. Durham’s second innings had commenced with Deyes bowling and Barnes having a rest, and the first over to Squance was an extraordinary one. The first ball was hit past cover to the boundary, the second went clean through the batman’s defence and over the bails, the third was a wide on the off, the fourth a no ball which gave a catch to Nicholls in the slips but who allowed the ball to go to the boundary. The fifth was cut square to the boundary, the sixth was cut for two, the seventh gave a chance to Dearing standing back and the eighth was placed into the hands of Morgan in the gulley. Thus there were eight deliveries, which included 3 fours and a two, a no ball and a wide, two missed chances and a wicket.
