The Cambridgeshire declaration set Northumberland a victory target of 233 runs in an hour and 50 minutes. The encounter between the two sides at Jesmond in July had been won by Northumberland by an innings and 136 runs. For the visitors Wingham in the Northumberland first innings scored a career best 146 runs in one hour and 45 minutes which contained 1 six and 29 fours. With Bell he added 138 runs for the sixth wicket. Hunting recorded his third successive ‘duck’ after scoring 219 not out against the same opponents at Jesmond. For Cambridgeshire in their second innings Ling scored 111 runs which included 14 fours and took 2 hours and 10 minutes. K G Reid in the same innings scored 88 with 10 fours. He and Ling added 179 runs for the fourth wicket in their second innings.
