The match between the two teams at Reading a week earlier had been won by Berkshire by an innings and 43 runs. For the winners there were 8 fours in Kent’s 65 and he top-scored in both innings. In Buckinghamshire’s second innings the last three wickets put on 98 runs whilst Berkshire conceded 41 extras. Hazelton, a schoolboy from Wellingborough, took 12 wickets for 140 runs in the match, including figures of 7 wickets for 77 runs in Berkshire’s first innings and 5 for 63 in their second. E H D Sewell took 5 wickets for 100 runs in Berkshire’s second innings. Franklin, Kent, and Wright each took 3 catches in the match. For the losers there were 1 six, 1 five, and 9 fours in Norris’ 67. Shoosmith and Nepean each took 3 catches in the match. E H D Sewell was dismissed off the first ball of the match, during which he conceded 172 runs whilst taking 8 wickets. Bad light ended play early on the first day. Berkshire were handicapped by the absence of Hawksworth, their best bowler, as he had damaged his hand when playing against Devon in the previous match. Berkshire’s second innings started at 2.50 pm on the second afternoon.
