There was no play on the first day until 3.45 pm. Whittington, after acting as Glamorgan captain throughout the negotiations regarding the state of the pitch and the possibility of play, decided when the umpires ultimately pronounced the wicket fit, to stand down and Riches took over the role. For the winners Wilson top-scored with 48, batting at number 9, whilst Barnes bowled unchanged from the station end utilising the strong wind which was bowling across the wicket to swing the ball to end up taking match figures of 11 wickets for 58 runs, including 5 wickets for 19 in Glamorgan’s first innings and 6 for 39 in their second. For the losers no batsman reached 20 runs whilst Hacker took 5 wickets for 75 runs in Staffordshire’s innings. An incident which gave rise to much discussion occurred at the close of the game. Creber was the last batsman, and on his arrival Glamorgan still required 58 to avoid an innings defeat. Creber a right-hand bat on facing Barnes turned round to bat left-handed, and when Barnes turned the tables on him by sending down an underhand ball, all along the ground, Creber found his ambidexterity was not equal to the occasion, and scraping right across the ball, he was adjudged leg before.
