On the first day rain stopped play shortly after 5.00 pm. Rain also affected the second day and there was no play after lunch, the match being abandoned at 3.30 pm. For Berkshire there were 11 fours in Denning’s 74, scored in 1½ hours, and in the Cornwall innings Belcher took a hat-trick, dismissing Barnes, Holman and Vibart. This feat was celebrated by Denning and Brougham, arm-in-arm, performing a series of step dances! For Cornwall there were 10 fours in Trevarthen’s 71 not out, scored in 2 hours. Whiting took 8 wickets for 44 runs, all the wickets taken in his last 4 overs including a spell of 5 wickets for 1 run.
