Those who dropped out were: J Atkinson and S F Yeoman (North), R Rogers (Midlands), and G F Holland and T Westborough (South). The last named had been elected on Monday 4 December as one of the umpires for the first-class Championship. Both umpires are known for just 35 of the 80 matches in which play took place in 1912, with one official only known for Match 67. All of the twenty umpires on the main list are known to have stood in at least one match – the only umpire who was not on the list who was known to have officiated was the Norfolk amateur, R G Pilch, who replaced J Gregory when the latter fell ill during the first day of Match 67 (between Norfolk and Cambridgeshire). THE 1912 MINOR COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP The Counties Involved As detailed above, Carmarthenshire withdrew from the competition; the number of counties participating therefore dropped from 21 to 20. Also as described above, after five years in which the competition had seen a divisional format, the Championship was reorganised to consist of a single table once more; the possibility of a Challenge Match was retained, with the team ending in second place being allowed to challenge the team finishing above them providing that the two teams had not met during the course of the season. 6
