Torrential rain the previous night and a heavy downpour during the day meant that no play was possible on Monday. On the second day play started at 2.35pm. No play took place on the final day and the match was abandoned at 1.00pm with rain falling. The Minor Counties had selected a strong side although S F Barnes was away on Test match duty for England. N V R Riches top scored with 51 for the hosts, an innings of 1 hour and 50 minutes, as Faulkner took 5 wickets for 59 for the visitors. Harrison severely wrenched his left knee and had to retire hurt, being replaced by the Staffordshire captain P Briggs in the field. Note that based on the detailed match report in the Staffordshire Advertiser, the fall of the fourth wicket in the Minor Counties innings has been determined with the score at 89 rather than the fifth wicket as in other publications. [Missing: Part fall of wickets, in the Minor Counties innings boundaries in Riches’s 51.] Sources: Staffordshire Advertiser 27 July, 3 August; Staffordshire Sentinel 29,30,31 July; The Times 30,31 July, 1 August; The History of South African Cricket p 760; Wisden 1913 Part II p 87; Cricket 3 August, p 394. 165
