It was the first Championship match played at Ely. The match between the two sides a week before at Spalding had also been won by Lincolnshire. For the winners, Ward scored 56 with 9 fours and debutant Waite 55. Brooke finished the match with a hat-trick, taking the last three Cambridgeshire wickets in the first three balls he bowled, his victims being Bryan, Gray and Morgan. On the second morning, a shower interrupted play early on for 15 minutes, but the Lincolnshire bowlers had no trouble in finishing off the Cambridgeshire second innings in the morning session in around 1½ hours.
