The match between the two sides at Bollington earlier in the month had also been won by Nottinghamshire 2 nd XI. Rain delayed the start on the first day by an hour. A feature of the match was the first wicket partnership of 275 runs for Nottinghamshire 2 nd XI between Carr and James, which was a new record for the Championship. James’s 172, scored in 2 hours and 40 minutes, contained 1 five and 28 fours, while Carr’s 102 not out included 10 fours in an innings of 2 hours and 50 minutes. Carr was just over 16 years of age. For Cheshire Fallows’s 60 included 3 fours. An ‘R Smith’ was down to play for Cheshire in this match, but he did not arrive and the Nottinghamshire captain agreed to Greenhalgh replacing him for the second day.
