The margin of victory was the largest of the season. The match between the two sides at Sale in May had been a weather-ruined draw. For the winners Foster took 10 wickets in the match for 39 runs. Cheshire were bowled out before lunch on the first day for 24 runs in 55 minutes. It was the third lowest total of the season. Grimshaw’s 101 contained 11 fours, 5 threes and 9 twos, scored in 2½ hours. Tattersall’s 87 included 11 fours, Booth’s 72 contained 11 fours, and Richardson’s 54 included 8 fours. In the Yorkshire innings there were two century partnerships, with Grimshaw and Booth adding 141 runs for the third wicket, and Richardson and Tattersall putting on 112 runs for the sixth wicket. In the Yorkshire innings Hardisty retired hurt when the total was 12 with an injured fore- finger, that was the same one he had broken in 1908 and had kept him out of cricket for several months. Rigby top-scored for Cheshire with 42. The 143 runs conceded by Buxton in the Yorkshire innings were the second highest of the season. 800 spectators were estimated to be present on the first day. This was the first Championship match played on the ground.
