The match between the two sides the previous week at Norwich had also been won by Lincolnshire. At the fall of the ninth wicket in the Norfolk first innings, complaining the wicket had been over-watered, Raikes the acting captain and regular captain Wilson, who was a spectator nursing a badly bruised hand, inspected the wicket. Raikes subsequently sent a cable to F E Lacey, the Secretary of the MCC and to Dr J Earl Norman, Secretary of the Minor Counties Cricket Association that read “Lincoln wicket heavily watered one- end, and admitted. We protest to you, but propose resuming play for sake of the gate. Raikes, Captain Norfolk”. Lincolnshire officials held a meeting the following day and denied the validity of the charges. Day, the Lindum groundsman, wrote to the local newspaper also denying the charge. The fallout was that the teams did not meet the next year. As far as the match was concerned, for Lincolnshire Riley scored 70 and Brooke took 7 wickets for 19 runs in the Norfolk first innings. For Norfolk Allsopp top-scored with 47, and Gibson took 6 wickets for 49 runs in the Lincolnshire first innings.
