For the home side, there were 17 fours and 9 threes in Wharmby’s 150, scored in 2 hours and 40 minutes. Holdstock’s 76 contained 5 fours , and Squire’s 67 included 7 fours. In the Bedfordshire innings, there were two century partnerships, with Holdstock and Wharmby adding 104 for the second wicket, and Wharmby and Squire 138 for the fifth. For Norfolk, there were 23 fours, 3 threes and 19 twos in Barratt’s 166, scored in 2¼ hours, and 10 fours, 3 threes and 12 twos in Stevens’s 100 not out, an innings of an hour and 40 minutes. Dunell’s 75 contained 15 fours and Cozens-Hardy’s 51 included 6 fours. In the Norfolk first innings Stevens and Pilch added 56 runs for the seventh wicket. In the Norfolk second innings, Barratt and Dunell added 126 runs for the second wicket, and Barratt and Cozens-Hardy 139 for the fourth. On the morning of the match, V Stephens, who had originally been selected to play as the Norfolk wicket-keeper, sprained his thumb after falling in the bathroom at his hotel in Bedford. Gascoigne was wired to take his place but did not arrive at the ground until the close of the Bedfordshire innings. G A Stevens took over the wicket-keeping duties, and O Pointer, of the Bedford Grammar School XI, fielded as substitute and held 2 catches.
