Minor Counties Championship 1908
147 CORNWALL 1904 Further research since the publication of the 1904 book has discovered that there were two Blackwells playing in 1904, not one. These were two brothers, Henry and Herbert Montague Blackwell. In conclusion it appears that H M Blackwell played in the first two matches - No 1 against Dorset at Poole and No 5 against Monmouthshire at Newport, and H Blackwell played in the last four. The missing Cornwall second innings bowling analysis in the Cornwall v Dorset match at Liskeard has also come to light. This summary of consequent amendments has been prepared by Tony Webb following input from Michael Weeks and Martin Gilbert in Cornwall. He would like to acknowledge the valuable comments of Andrew Lowe and Colin Munford in particular, and also those of Michael Pearce in reviewing these changes. Season Bowling Averages Page 20 - F C Barnes – amend maidens from 27 to 28; H Tresawna – amend overs from 92 to 98 and amend maidens from 12 to 21; and Trevarthen, C – amend overs from 210.1 to 231.1, maidens from 56 to 67, runs conceded from 595 to 614, wickets from 31+4 to 35, and average from 19.19 to 17.54. Match Score No 1 – Dorset v Cornwall at Poole The Cornwall runs bowling in the Dorset innings at Poole were 41 short and there was no indication in any of the sources listed that H M Blackwell bowled. [Of the five known Cornwall bowlers in the Dorset match, three - Bray, Nile and Donaldson - are not included in the Cornwall averages in the West Briton and Wisden. For all three, adjusting their analyses by adding 41 extra runs conceded would make the runs conceded implausible if not impossible. The most likely explanation is that there were one or more additional bowlers in the innings whose analyses were not recorded.] The Cornwall end of season bowling averages in The West Briton and Wisden give H Blackwell as bowling 27 overs, no maidens, 97 runs and 2 wickets, which suggest that he bowled in both matches (1 and 5) in which he played. Subtracting his Monmouthshire match totals from his averages total we get 14-0-47-0. This is a plausible analysis for this match as far as overs, maidens and wickets are concerned. It would mean runs conceded are 6 in excess. So the changes are: Page 26 - Dorset innings bowling analysis – below ‘Bray’ insert ‘Blackwell 14 – 0 – 47 – 0’ Dorset innings bowling analysis – totals – overs amend from ‘80’ to ‘94’, total amend from ‘248’ to ‘295’, and add directly below ‘[289]’ Missing lines 1 and 2 – delete ‘and bowling runs conceded 41 short in all sources listed’ and replace by ‘and runs conceded bowling 6 in excess.] Notes – at end add in italics [‘H M Blackwell’s bowling analysis is derived from the Cornwall averages in Wisden and The West Briton.]’ Match Score No 57 – Cornwall v Devon at Truro Page 82 - Cornwall debutants – amend ‘2’ to ‘3’ and after ‘F C Barnes,’ insert ‘H Blackwell,’ Match Score No 77 – Cornwall v Dorset at Liskeard The missing bowling analysis for this match has been found in the Cornish Times. The analysis for this innings included in the match score in the 1904 book had been derived from the Cornwall Averages in Wisden and The West Briton. The analysis given in the Cornish Times for the second innings is as follows, with differences from derived analysis or gaps given in bold: Barnes (2) 7 1 23 0 Trevarthen (1) 21 11 35 1 W N Bickford-Smith (4) 10 1 38 2 Goldsworthy H Tresawna (3) 19 9 31 6 Blackwell (5) 1 0 1 0 Extras 9 0 Total 58 22 137 9 Please note that this analysis and that of the Dorset bowling were printed in the corrigendum in the 1906 book. The Cornish Times completes gaps also for the Umpires who were W Hearne and S Wrigley, Dorset 2nd inns fall of ninth wicket at 95, Cornwall 1st inns fall of wickets - 2nd at 28, 3rd at 28, 4th at 28, 5th at 57 and 8th at 66. Match Score No 93 – Cornwall v Cambridgeshire at Lanhydrock The bowling analysis in the Cambridgeshire innings is only known for one player - Barnes - who according to match accounts bowled six overs for six runs. Accepting the amendments to Match 77 then the Cornwall averages would suggest that in this innings Trevarthen conceded 20 runs which if adopted would lead to H Blackwell conceding 15 runs to make the runs total add correctly to 41 with no extras. So the changes are: Page 118 - Cambridgeshire innings, Cornwall bowling analysis – Trevarthen runs conceded ‘20’, H Blackwell runs conceded ‘15’, Total runs ‘[35]’, Directly below ‘[41]’ Missing lines 1 and 2 – delete ‘and bowling analysis, which has not been found in any of the sources listed ‘ and replace by ‘and bowling runs conceded 6 short’ Notes – at end add in italics new sentences ‘[The runs conceded for Trevarthen and H Blackwell have been derived from the Cornwall averages in Wisden and The West Briton. It has not been possible to derive the overs and maidens in the same way.]’ Player Season Averages in Alphabetical Order Page 138 F C Barnes – maidens 28 not 27; W N Bickford-Smith overs 29 not 30; insert H Blackwell 4, 5, 0, 34, 68, 13.60, -, -, 1, 2, -, 37, 5, 139, 4, 34.75, 1-15, - - ; amend H M Blackwell to 2, 1, 0, 5, 5, 5.00, -, -, -, 1, -, 27, 0, 97, 2, 48.50, 2-31, - - .
