Minor Counties Championship 1908

11 Like the preceding year, 1908 was not a season in which all-rounders performed great deals. George Wharmby of Bedfordshire took 35 wickets to go with his 616 runs but they were taken at a relatively expensive 20.74 apiece, whilst the only other all-rounder to top 400 runs was George Turnbull of Durham, who took only 30 wickets at 18.63. As in 1907, bowlers who could bat dominated proceedings. Sydney Barnes of Staffordshire scored 336 runs at 21.00 to go alongside his 92 wickets, Alf Morris of Durham amassed 246 runs at just 18.92 to accompany his 84 dismissals whilst Harry White of Hertfordshire scored 348 runs at 23.20 as well as taking his 67 wickets. The best match performance was by George Platt of Surrey 2nd XI, who scored 123 runs and took 14-97 against Dorset at Dorchester. Of the wicket-keepers, Edmund Apthorp of Bedfordshire topped the list with 22 dismissals, taking 18 catches and making 4 stumpings. Thomas Luce of Wiltshire finished a close second with 21 victims (13 being caught and 8 stumped) whilst Tom Ullathorne of Northumberland made 20 dismissals; he caught 14 batsmen and stumped 6. Other keepers to make 16 or more dismissals were Bert Vigar of Surrey 2nd XI and George Allen of Lincolnshire, both with 18, and three with 16, Fred Stedman of Surrey 2nd XI, JR Williams of Monmouthshire and Tom Davies of Devon. In terms of catches held, six fielders held 13 or more. William Bancroft of Glamorgan led with 20 catches, whilst Jack Marshall and George Milne , both of Northumberland, took 15 each. George Turnbull of Durham made 14 catches while the two who took 13 were William Brown of Yorkshire 2nd XI and Jack Golding of Hertfordshire.
