Rain prevented any cricket on the first day with play being abandoned shortly after 4.00 pm. For the visitors, Barnes took 11 wickets in the match for 41 runs, including the rare feat of taking all 10 for 26 in the Yorkshire 2 nd XI first innings, which was statistically the best innings bowling performance of the season. Brown top-scored in the match for Staffordshire with 38. Frank was due to captain the home team but withdrew at a late stage because of a wrenched knee. Hayley, the Wakefield professional and coach, replaced him and led the side. It was his debut in the Championship. This was the first time that a championship match was played at the ground.
