When the teams met at Wearmouth in June, Durham were the victors. The start on the first day was delayed by rain until around 3.30 pm. Rain early in the morning of the second day contributed to the wicket becoming a very difficult one on which to bat. For the winners, there were 11 fours in Hartley’s 103. Heap’s 73 contained 9 fours. In the Lancashire innings, Hartley and Heap put on 159 for the first wicket. Heap took 10 wickets in the match for 36 runs. In the Durham first innings 4 wickets fell with the score at 35 and in the second 3 at 68. The Durham first innings total of 41 was the third lowest of the season. This was the first time that a championship match was played at the ground.
