For the visitors, Hope took 8 wickets for 25 runs in the Staffordshire first innings. Statistically, it was the third best innings bowling performance of the season. The start of play was delayed by half an hour on the second day. Heavy rain at 3.30 pm stopped play and, as the rain showed no sign of halting, the match was abandoned at 4.30 pm. 3,000 spectators were reported to have been present on the first day when, in contrast to the second, the weather was fine.
