Minor Counties Championship 1907

15 reported that ‘he had retired from the team’. In 1911 the census records him as living in Egerton Road, Blackpool and his occupation is given as a ‘Professional Cricketer’. Since then nothing has been found about him to date until his death. It is possible that he may have had some connection with Rossall School as his wife died later during the war at Rossall Emergency Hospital but this link has not yet been proven. He was one of the few Yorkshire first-class cricketers whose date of death was unknown, but research by Tony Percival has revealed he died during the Second World War on 19 May 1942 at 14 Mythop Road, Blackpool. His death certificate gives his wartime occupation as ‘Camp Commandant – Catering’, and his cause of death as cardiac failure. THE BOOK The Match Scores The scores are presented in the same format as in previous books. Scorebooks exist for Devon, Glamorgan, Staffordshire, and Yorkshire 2nd XI. The scorebook for Lancashire 2nd XI is believed to be a copy. As in previous years, newspapers remain the main source of information, with close to one hundred being consulted in researching the scores. Again the magazine Cricket included a number of scorecards and also end of season averages for some counties. Missing Details The number of instances where bowling analyses did not add correctly fell from four in 1906 to three in 1907. The two matches concerned are: Match 14 – Hertfordshire v Suffolk at Hertford – both Hertfordshire innings – Suffolk runs conceded 2 runs over in each innings Match 89 – Berkshire v Wiltshire at Reading – Wiltshire first innings – Berkshire runs conceded 4 runs short. The Averages As in previous years the averages are provided in two forms – by county and by player. In both cases they are listed in alphabetical order. 496 players took part in the season, compared with 506 in 1906. In the averages the symbol * indicates a not out innings, + denotes a player making his debut for his team in 1907, of which there are 154 and a name in bold denotes a player making his final appearance for his team in 1907, of which there are 163. An addendum and corrigendum for previous seasons, which list details found since the previous issue, is included after the statistical survey of the season. Minor Counties Representative Match There was no representative match in the 1907 season.
