The result was to prove a setback to Monmouthshire’s efforts to win the Championship. The match between the two sides at Newport in July had been drawn. On the first day, Devon were bowled out for 35 before lunch and ended play only 96 runs ahead with two wickets remaining. For the winners, Light took 11 wickets in the match for 63 runs and Aston 8 for 89. There were 8 fours in Brunskill’s 68 and 1 six and 8 fours in Davies’s 57 not out. In the Devon second innings, Brunskill and Boles put on 50 runs for the seventh wicket, and Davies and Aston 93 for the last wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. For the visitors, Robathan’s 52 contained 6 fours. In the Monmouthshire first innings, Robathan and Stedman put on 56 runs for the eighth wicket. The Devon first innings total of 35 was the second lowest of the season. Newspaper accounts report that over five thousand spectators were present on the first day. In the Monmouthshire first innings, all ten batsmen dismissed were bowled. When he had scored 3 in the Monmouthshire first innings, Tatham reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches. The same milestone was reached by Brunskill when he had scored 13 in the Devon second innings. [In the Monmouthshire first innings, there are conflicting versions for the fall of the third and fifth wickets. The one adopted is judged to be the most probable.] [Missing: Umpires; precise time completed.] Sources: Devon Scorebook; Western Daily Mercury 12,14 August; Western Morning News 12,14 August; County Observer and Monmouthshire Advertiser 19 August; South Wales Argus 11,12,14 August; South Wales Daily News 12,14 August; South Wales Echo 11,12 August; Western Mail 12,14 August; Sporting Life 12,14 August; The Sportsman 12,14 August.
