The match at Harrogate in July between the two teams had also been won by Yorkshire. For the winners, Rudston’s 87 contained 8 fours. In the Yorkshire first innings, Grimshaw and Rudston put on 116 runs for the first wicket. Brown’s 43 which was the highest score for th e losers included 3 fours. On the first day Oyston was late arriving at the ground, so Lawrence opened the bowling with Elms. Leather had a lame knee and batted with a runner. Hollowood retired hurt at the start of the Staffordshire second innings before a run had been scored, after receiving a knock from a ball bowled by Oyston. He returned to bat at the fall of the fourth wicket.
