It was the first time that a championship match had been won by a team losing only one wicket. The Monmouthshire declaration left 5½ hours for them to dismiss the home side twice. On the first day rain delayed the start until 12.40 pm, extended the lunch hour by 20 minutes, interrupted play for 10 minutes in the afternoon session, stopped play at around 4.30 pm and play was abandoned for the day at 5.00 pm. For the winners, Silverlock and E S Phillips in an unbroken partnership put on 284 runs for the second wicket. It broke two records, exceeding the 257 runs for the second wicket by B L Peel and G E Wharmby for Bedfordshire against Cambridgeshire at Dunstable in 1903, as well as being a new partnership record for any wicket in the Championship, exceeding the 275 put on for the third wicket by J H Hickin and A J Golding for Hertfordshire against Norfolk at Bishop’s Stortford in 1900. There was 1 six, 23 fours, 6 threes and 10 twos in Silverlock’s 155 not out, and 1 five, 12 fours, 7 threes and 13 twos in E S Phillips’s 133 not out. Steeples took 13 wickets in the match for 93 runs, which was statistically the third b est match bowling performance of the year. His 9 for 45 in the Glamorgan second innings was statistically the second best innings bowling performance of the season. For the losers, Brain scored 58 not out, containing 8 fours. In the Glamorgan first innings, Russell and Brain added 57 runs for the eighth wicket. Brain kept wicket for Glamorgan, but towards the end of play on the first day injured a finger, and Riches took over the gloves. The gate receipts for the game amounted to £26-11-6.
