The game between the two teams at Jesmond in June had also been won by Northumberland. For the winners, there were 9 fours in both Clayton’s 86 and Chambers’s 67. In the Northumberland first innings, they put on 149 runs for the opening wicket. It was the third highest partnership for that wicket during the season. Elsey performed the ‘hat-trick’ in the Yorkshire first innings, his victims being Myers, Frank and Elms. It was the second time this feat had been achieved during the season. The 4 catches held by Elsey in the Yorkshire second innings equalled the Championship record by a fielder achieved on 13 previous occasions. The 5 catches he held in the match were the most during the season, equalled by two others. When he had scored 42 in the Yorkshire second innings, Rudston reached the career milestone of a thousand runs in championship matches.
