Wiltshire achieved the single point they needed to win the Championship outright from Surrey 2 nd XI. The home team completed the ‘double’ having won at Newport when the two teams had met at the end of July. For Wiltshire, Stevens top-scored with innings of 49 and 47. For Monmouthshire, Silverlock’s 84 contained 9 fours, and lasted 140 minutes. Monmouthshire’s second innings score at the close of the first day was widely reported as 1 for 1 wicket with Holmes out for 0. However, this was corrected to 2-1 at the start of the second day with Holmes being credited with 1 out and Mayes 1 not out. E S Phillips did not bat in the Monmouthshire first innings because he ‘was slightly indisposed’. C G Bond held the substitute catch in the Wiltshire first innings. When Stevens scored his 47 in the Wiltshire second innings, he reached the career milestone of 2,000 runs in championship matches.
